1. Create value and prove it.
  2. Build skills relevant to themselves and the job market.
  3. Document their work.
  4. Build a strong reputation by doing great work.

  6. Are honest. They say, “I don’t know,” when they truly don’t know. Then they learn it.
  7. Under-promise, over-deliver.
  8. Write often. They’ll blog, tweet, take notes, journal. They know writing is a valuable skill in any role, so they become better at it by writing daily if they can.
  9. Get stuff done.
  10. Accept honest feedback and apply it. They’re also open to input on projects and hold their work with open hands.
  11. Don’t take things personally. They practice charitable interpretation.
  12. Are present.
  13. Follow through on everything, no matter how small or unnoticed.
  14. Go beyond offering only perspective or ideas–they take action. They create solutions.
  15. Read–a lot. To quote Ryan Holiday, “When intelligent people read, they ask themselves a simple question: What do I plan to do with this information?”
  16. Show genuine excitement for the company or product and communicate that through speed, writing, and their pitch or project.
  17. Ask deeper questions.
  18. Shadow people who know more.
  19. Communicate often and easily.
  20. Know how to tell their story.
  21. Burn their resume and show their work instead.
  22. Never turn down interviews. Even if they don’t land the job, they know networking is important. They build relationships.
  23. Use everything as an opportunity to learn.
  24. Know they’re not above any task or person.
  25. Have fun. They double-down on their competitive advantages and the things they enjoy.
  26. Are trustworthy.
  27. Become their own credential.
